If the sale of canvases in trade is proven throughout Europe from the 17th century, the form in which it was available is little known  : Frame / rolls/ piece of canvas... ?

We find traces of "canvases stretched on large frames" in the inventory of 1776 of the company BELOT. It was only at the beginning of the 19th century that the first rolls of canvas made their appearance among the Parisian Merchants of Colours. At this time, there were only about ten houses in capacity to prepare the canvases.
